Omar Faces Primary Challenge Amid Israel Resolution
House Foreign Affairs Committee vote looms for Squad member
Ilhan Omar, one of the progressive House members known as the "Squad," is facing a primary challenge from within her own party on Tuesday.
The challenge comes after Omar backed a resolution recognizing Israel as a legitimate ally, a move that angered some fellow Democrats. The resolution passed the House on Tuesday, but Omar was one of only eight Democrats to vote against it.
Omar's primary challenger, Antone Melton-Meaux, is a former state representative who has criticized Omar's record on foreign policy. Melton-Meaux has also said that he believes Omar is too focused on "identity politics" and not on the needs of her constituents.
The primary election will be held on Aug. 9. If Omar loses, she will be the first member of the "Squad" to be defeated in a primary election.
